The AMI Primary classroom provides a beautiful environment for children from 3 to 6 years of age. During this developmental period Dr. Montessori observed that the child has special tools that aid the process of his self-construction, the absorbent mind, the sensitive periods and the human tendencies. Guided by these, our environments are prepared to facilitate maximum learning and exploration.
One of Montessori’s greatest observations is that, “the hand is the chief teacher of the child”. On this insight she based all her classroom materials as well as her theories of discipline. Many of the exercises in the primary classroom have the dual long-range purpose of developing the child’s concentration and coordination – two of the most valuable skills for learning. The community of the primary classroom provides the child with the atmosphere to develop self-discipline and become self-directed as they are introduced to all academic areas.
